| SURVEY REVEALS TOP ONLINE HABITS OF MALAYSIAN YOUTH |

KUALA LUMPUR : According to a recent survey by global market research company Synovate, 40% of Malaysian youth between the ages of 8 to 24 said that the Internet keeps them up-to-date, and 43% said that Internet gives them useful information while 45% said that they plan to use the Internet more over other media. When online, young Malaysians are into blogging (48%). Thirty-eight percent spend a portion of their time reading blogs without making any comments while close to a quarter (22%) both read and make comments on blogs. Twenty-one percent of Malaysian youngsters create and update their blogs regularly. Over one third (38%) of young Malaysians read other people’s social network profile pages while 31% update their own profile pages. Forty-four percent take the initiative to read other people’s social network profile pages as well as update their own.  The fourth annual Synovate Young Asians survey examines the hearts and minds of the region's eight to 24 year olds, revealing their media consumption, purchase habits, attitudes, favourite singers and cartoons. It covers 12 markets across Asia, including Japan and Vietnam for the first time. Here's some more of what we found: Other online activities •   Young Malaysians aged eight to 24 spend an average of 1.2 hours a day on email, one hour and thirty-six minutes a day as part of online communities, two hours 48 minutes on instant messaging and two hours 36 minutes on other Internet activities •   When online, 66% used email while 61% listened to music in the past 30 days •   Over half (53%) were into downloading while 51% played online games on their own •   In their search for information on the net, music (68%) was the top category followed by video, console and online games (53%) A mobile bunch •   Young Malaysians utilise their mobile phones to stay connected. Two thirds (66%) own a mobile phone (above the regional average which was 60%) •   74% of those who have a phone used the SMS function, while over half (56%) took photos in the past 30 days •   57% listened to music on their mobile and half (50%) played games in the past 30 days About personal product ownership among young Malaysians •   Two thirds (66%) of Malaysian youth have a savings account in their own names (above the regional average which was 46%) •   30% own a desktop computer while close to a quarter (22%) own a laptop computer •   19% own an iPod or MP3 player Young pester powerful Malaysians – having a say, influence and getting their own  •   More than eight in ten (84%) of Malaysian youth believe that they have the biggest say and are able to influence the purchase decisions as well as buy their own snacks, candies, chocolates and soft drinks •   70% are able to influence the purchasing of clothing and apparel •   68% of Malaysian youth are able to dictate the choice of venues when it comes to fast-food outlets and quick service restaurants About leisure activities done in the past 30 days •   62% dined out with parents (the region’s highest) while one third (33%) dined out with friends •   Over half (51%) of young Malaysians played sports •   Close to half (49%) watched video tapes, DVD’s and VCD’s •   45% listened to music and the radio Climate conscious and pro-active •   57% of young Malaysians are concerned about the effects of climate change •   Apart from being aware of climate change, young Malaysians have personally taken proactive steps to reduce the effects of climate change. Forty-eight percent recycled waste while over a quarter (29%) had cut-down on using packaging and bags in the previous year •   The issue of climate change had an effect on purchase decisions among young Malaysians as 23% bought green products Favourite cartoons and animated characters among young Singaporeans •   Tom & Jerry (13%) was the most popular cartoon among young Malaysians •   Doraemon (11%) came in at second place followed by Mr. Bean (10%)
